Every week that passes in the winter, is another week closer to spring in my mind! For some reason, this winter has felt extra cold (even though we’re only in January), and maybe that’s just the overall climate of lockdowns and fewer recreational activities available weighing on me.
A project that’s been keeping me busy lately is reducing our home heating bill and making our house more comfortable in the winter and summer. This has involved finding any drafts around the house, particularly the basement and sealing them or re-insulating problem areas. Many leaks have been found so far, it will be interesting to see what sort of impact it actually makes on the comfort level and natural gas usage.
The first article gives you a few more ideas to save on heating costs in the winter. I also have a link to a new website for investors, and of course another bitcoin article – it seems to be a trending theme these days.
10 Ways to Reduce Your Heating Bill | Maple Money
Check out this article over at Maple Money that goes over some easy ways you can look to reduce your home heating bills in the winter. #8 is one of my favourites, letting the sun pour into large windows during the winter months. That one helps your heating bill and your mood! One quick note on turning down your water heater as a potential source for saving money, be careful to ensure the temperature is still high enough to kill bacteria such as Legionella.

Lost Passwords Lock Millionaires Out of Their Bitcoin Fortunes | NY Times
Imagine watching Bitcoin prices skyrocket from $500 to $50,000, then remembering you bought a bunch of coins a few years back that you had forgotten about. But damn… “where did I put the password for my digital wallet?” I can only imagine the panic of losing my actual wallet with ID cards and $100 or so in cash, but imagine losing a wallet with $200 million dollars in it? Well, it’s happened. How about a colleague reformatting a hard drive that contained 800 bitcoins? Yup…. that happened too. This is another one of my critiques of the digital currency everyone seems to be falling in love with these days. “Why not just store it in a bank?” you say? Another problem… nobody trusts the exchanges that will actually hold the currency, which is why coins are stored in ‘secure wallets’. Anyway…. sucks for this guy – I hope he finds his password!
That’s all for this weekend, be sure to check out my latest Monthly Update and my newest article reviewing Borrowell, the service to get your free credit score. And of course, the latest articles on the homepage.
Have a wonderful weekend!
