PERSONAL FINANCE WORLD WEEKLY READING – MARCH 27, 2021

Weekly Reading · March 27, 2021

Reading Time: 2 mins

Weekly Reading March 27, 2021The big news this past week has seemed to be, the giant cargo ship Ever Given, stuck in the middle of the Suez Canal.

While it’s slowed the movement of goods and International trade considerably along this key route to Europe, it also generated a ton of great memes related to the unfortunate situation.

Seems like a decent trade-off.

Other topics this week include new Credit Card offers from American Express, and the question of whether a financial advisor is still necessary, given the prevalence of low-fee ETFs that track the broader markets.

Also, check out the latest addition to Family Money Saver this week, my FREE Easy to Use Annual Budget Spreadsheet.

Egypt Aims to Free Cargo Ship |  The Wall Street Journal
A giant 1,300-foot cargo ship stuck in a canal is all the news this week.  It actually seems to be a nice little respite from COVID-19 discussions, as vaccinations still roll out slowly as variants spread, bringing on a potential third wave of infections.  So this giant container ship is currently stuck in the middle of the Suez Canal and delaying or re-routing other cargo ships, with fairly significant global trade implications, at least in the short-term.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes for this to be resolved, in the meantime, enjoy the memes.

What is Financial Advice? |  The Rational Reminder Podcast
If you’re not already a fan of the Rational Reminder Podcast, you should check it out. In the latest episode, Benjamin Felix and Cameron Passmore break down reasons why a financial advisor is still potentially a very relevant piece of your overall financial strategy.  While we now have an abundance of market tracking funds that will do most of the heavy lifting, there are many other areas financial advisors can provide value such as tax advice, planning, allocation strategies and more.  Your overall goals are important when examining the full scope of your unique, individual financial picture.  I’ll be wearing my new t-shirt next episode.

Amex Platinum & Bonvoy Card New Bonus Offers | Money We Have
With COVID-19 vaccines and more travel potentially on the horizon (finally), credit card companies have begun to start rolling out new offers.  Many credit card providers had put marketing campaigns and incentive offers on hold, but now some great new deals have slowly been rolling out.  In particular, the American Express Platinum card is offering a 50,000 Member Rewards signup bonus (60,000 using a referral link).  The American Express Marriott Bonvoy card is also offering a welcome bonus of 60,000 Bonvoy points (65,000 using a referral link).  Check the article above for more details on these great new offers!
